Right and Wrong

I try to make it a conscious point to always do the right thing. I know that I have very strict rules that I live by but thinking about them got me wondering... How do we know what the "right" thing is? What do you think is the difference between right and wrong? And is there a clear right and wrong for everything? I know that when you get nit-picky, some things are right for some people and wrong for others but I'm talking about the very basic code of morals and ethics. If there's a line, what is it, and where does it start to branch out?

We learn right and wrong from parents and other adults who model right and wrong for us. From there, it's up to the individual to determine what is right or wrong for them. Apparently some have consciences that speak louder than others. I'm sure I could wax far more philosophic, but I've gotta go get dinner ready and have some quality family time. Yay!

When you look at a car, it is obvious that someone had to design that car. When you look at the human body and see its amazing abilities, if one is reasonable one must also conclude that it also had a Designer/Creator. The Designer/Creator did not leave us to ourselves for us to decide what is right and wrong. He's given us a standard or a measuring rod to measures ourselves against. It is the Bible. We can know by reading it if we are a good person or not. Have you ever told a lie? If you honestly answer, you would probably have to say yes. (I have.) The Designer/Creator has told us we should not lie. Have you ever stolen anything? (I have.) I think again if you were to honestly answer that question you would have to say you've taken something from someone at one time or another. That makes us both liers and thieves. The Designer/Creator says in the Bible that the person who sins must die. I'm sure you've noticed that everyone who enters this world dies. That means we are all sinners, none of us measure up to God's perfect standard of righteousness. But we also learn from the Bible that He loves us and He doesn't want death to be victorious over us. John 3:16 says that "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but shall have everlasting life." A Holy God cannot allow sin to go unpunished. His love caused Him to send His Son, Jesus, (the reason we celebrate Christmas) to die and take the punishment for our sins that we deserve. And to show that Jesus death was acceptable by God He raised Him from the dead after three days(why we celebrate Easter). Why was it acceptable? Because He lived a perfect life, a life we could never live, because we lie, we steal, some of us are adulterers and murderers, we have gods other than our Designer/Creator. I hope I helped.

Hi Kathy, I agree with a lot of what you're saying but I don't believe that you can just live life however you want with no regard for your actions and be okay just because you believe in Jesus. I'm not sure if that's what you think either, I've just heard it in the past. I understand that we all do things that are imperfect but I also don't think that we should say "Well I'm gonna sin no matter what, so I might as well go ahead and sin". I guess you kind of broadened my question. If we are all destined to sin, where is the line of who is a good person and who is not? If you believe in Jesus, are you automatically a good person? I don't think so. I also don't think that if you don't believe in Jesus that you are a bad person. Maybe right and wrong is just something that is different for every person and we just have to hope that we're at least living up to our own standards. Thanks for the post!

Thanks for the reply Allie. We must have the most utter regard for our actions. We were granted life to reflect the glory and holiness of our Creator. Sin has marred that. Sin entered the world through the first man, Adam. And it has been passed down through all of mankind. Have you noticed that you don't have to teach a child selfishness? They come by it naturally. The Bible says that no one is good. There is no good person. Our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. (Any work that we try to do on our own to gain acceptance before God is like a filthy rag.) When we put our faith in Christ, in the work He did for us on the cross, we are granted His righteousness, and then we become acceptable to God and have a perfect standing before Him. He no longer sees us as a sinner and deserving death. In "practice" Christians still goof up, often, but our aim and desires should be to live a life pleasing to the Lord. In "position" before God, a Christian is perfect because the righteous of Christ has been put to his/her account. A Christian should never continue consciously to practice sin once they become a Christian. They should never use their right standing before God as license to sin and think, "oh, God will forgive me." They have a new life, therefore their walk should be new as well. When a person says they are a Christian but you don't see a change, their faith is suspect. The Bible actually calls us to test ourselves to see if we are in the Faith. Christ came so that we might have life, and have it abundantly. Jesus said in the book of John, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man comes unto the Father but by me". Not all are as bad as some can be, but if you don't believe that Jesus is the Savior and have not put your faith in Him, you are as "bad off" as you can be. There is coming a day when God will judge everyone, and those who have trusted Christ will be saved from His wrath. He is patient with sinful mankind, but someday that patience will end. I hope you will put your trust in Christ alone for salvation and so you too can have abundant, joyful life!! We call this good news that Jesus died for us-The Gospel. I have more good news. There will come a time for the Christian when their practice matches up with their position perfectly. It is when death releases us into the presence of God in heaven. Death for the Christian is not something to be feared, but is something actually looked forward to. Christians have a great Hope! Please trust Christ!!
